Introduction
St. Stephen’s Kisugu, Church of Uganda, located in Kisugu, Kampala, serves a diverse congregation from both upscale and low-income areas, including the Kanyogoga slum. Established in 2010 by Bishop Hannington Mutebi, our ministry addresses the challenges faced by the slum communities, such as inadequate housing, sanitation, and high rates of crime, drug abuse, and poverty. How We Started
During his time as Vicar of St. Stephen’s Kisugu, Reverend Canon Mutebi recognized the disparity between the church's mission partnerships and the needs of the immediate community. Taking a prayer walk with a few congregational members, they witnessed the challenging living conditions and lack of opportunities for the surrounding communities. Inspired by this, the Touch Lives Ministry was initiated as a compassion ministry of St. Stephen’s Kisugu.
Originally known as the Kanyogoga Project, the ministry started by assisting children from Kanyogoga with school fees. However, it became evident that the parents/caregivers struggled to meet other educational needs due to poverty. To address this, the ministry expanded its scope, adopting the name Touch Lives Ministry and incorporating Kanyogoga as a project within it. This expansion allows for the development of additional projects in the future, focusing on socio-economic empowerment and sustainability.
The ministry's growth was driven by the realization that relying solely on the congregation's financial contributions for funding was not sustainable. By broadening its initiatives, Touch Lives Ministry aims to make a more substantial and long-lasting impact on the communities it serves.
